Insulated winter model RAYVE LAHTI for autumn and winter, for children from nursery age through to younger primary schoolers. The upper is leather, both nubuck and smooth, with a waterproof membrane inside. Inner width ranges from 70 mm in size 23 to 88 mm in size 36, so there's room for medium-wide and wide feet. The sole stays flexible, the heel is slightly reinforced.

How they feel

Winter boots are usually stiff as a board. Here the sole bends, your child feels whether they're standing on a kerb or frozen earth, and toes have room to spread in the front - in size 30 there's 197 mm length and 78 mm width inside.

The heel sits in a slightly reinforced counter that guides direction when running downhill, but doesn't lock the ankle rigidly. The high cut adds support at the top and, importantly, stops snow getting inside.

Compared to a conventional winter boot with rigid sole and raised heel, the difference is most noticeable on uneven terrain: your child corrects more with their own foot and wobbles less on tiptoe.

Size and fit

Trace your child's foot on paper in the afternoon or evening when the foot is largest, hold the pencil vertically and measure the distance from heel to longest toe - in children this might not be the big toe. Then compare with the model's inner length: 27 has 175 mm, 28 has 180 mm, between 30 and 31 the difference is only 3 mm, while between 31 and 32 the length jumps by 12 mm. Read width the same way, 70 mm in size 23 versus 88 mm in size 36.

The fit is designed for medium to wider feet with medium instep and medium ankle. Winter models are worn with thicker socks, factor this in when choosing.

Who they're not for

• Children with distinctly narrow feet - even the smallest size 23 has 70 mm inside, the boot will be loose at the instep and a narrower winter fit would serve better
• If you only need a low boot for spring and summer - this model is high and designed for autumn and winter
• Children with high insteps, for whom the medium-height cut presses over the velcro
• If your child has foot pain or postural issues, consult a physiotherapist or podiatrist first

Common questions

Can a child put them on at nursery independently?

The fastening is only velcro, so yes, it usually works for preschoolers. Tightness can be adjusted any time during the day.

Will feet stay dry in wet conditions?

The upper has a waterproof membrane that handles rain, wet grass and slush. They're not designed for standing in water or wading though.

What if I get the size wrong?

Within 14 days of ordering you can arrange an exchange or return. It helps us if you send a photo or short video showing how the boot fits on the foot.

Care

Let mud dry and brush it off, nubuck with a suede brush, smooth leather with a damp cloth. Dry naturally at room temperature, never on a radiator or by a fire. Reapply waterproofing treatment after several wears in wet conditions, and occasionally nourish smooth leather with cream.
