A black brush from the Collonil Carbon Lab range. The handle is wooden, the bristles are light-coloured and medium-stiff. They're not so soft that they merely stroke the surface, nor so harsh that they'll damage suede leather.
You can work with it both dry and wet. Dry, it pulls dust out of stitching and grooves in the sole—places a cloth can't reach. Wet, it distributes cleaning foam evenly into the material's structure. The manufacturer also lists it as an applicator brush, which you'll appreciate when you have foam in your hand and don't want to spread it all over your shoe with your finger.
Always brush only when your shoes are dry. The bristles won't pull out damp dirt—they'll just push it deeper into the fibres. Let your shoes dry overnight away from direct heat and only tackle them in the morning.
For nubuck and velour, brush in one direction only. If you brush back and forth, the nap will be combed in both directions and your shoe will look patchy even after cleaning. For wet cleaning, dampen the brush, apply foam and work in short strokes, then wipe away the residue with a damp cloth.

This one belongs to the Carbon Lab range, can handle delicate and sensitive leather, and works as an applicator too—so it naturally pairs with foams and cleaners from the same range, such as Carbon Lab white sole cleaner or Carbon Complete. The other brush, the one with the light wooden handle, belongs to the Classic range and the manufacturer also recommends it for fur.
