REVIEW OF RAYVE BILBAO 3.0: Kids’ ankle barefoot boots for the city and puddles

Kids’ shoes need to be ready for anything. We tested whether RAYVE BILBAO 3.0 can handle every adventure a five-year-old explorer can throw at them. Read on to see how they got on.

When it comes to children’s shoes, what matters most to me is that they have plenty of room for the toes, stay securely on the foot, and don’t restrict your child’s movement in any way. That’s exactly what we had in mind when we decided to try the barefoot ankle boots RAYVE BILBAO 3.0 in the brown cognac colour.

This time, the testing was done by my five-year-old son Samuel, who definitely didn’t go easy on them. It wasn’t just everyday walking – he took them on walks, for running, through wet grass and into puddles. That gave us a great chance to see how they perform across different everyday kids’ activities.

Main pros:

• Versatile look – the cognac colour is timeless and easy to style; great for the city and for outdoors
• Stays securely on the foot – the laces let you adjust the fit precisely, and the side zip makes getting them on much quicker
• The sole is soft and flexible – supports natural foot movement
• Good grip – the patterned outsole holds well even on wet, slippery surfaces
• Easy to look after – everyday dirt comes off suede leather easily
• Handles any terrain and activity – running, wet grass and puddles didn’t bother them at all

Main cons:

• The ankle cut won’t suit everyone – children who prefer more freedom around the ankle may find low-cut barefoot shoes a better fit

Recommendation: Before the first wear, it’s worth applying a waterproofing spray, especially if you plan to wear them often in damp conditions.

Key features and technical assessment

At first glance, it’s clear that RAYVE BILBAO 3.0 are designed with the natural development of a child’s foot in mind. The toe box is spacious enough, giving toes room without being squashed – and for children’s shoes, that’s the foundation everything else builds on.

The boots come in two colour options – black and cognac – and we went for cognac. Brown is timeless, easy to pair with outfits, and unlike black it doesn’t show everyday dirt quite as much. The upper is suede leather, and the lining combines textile with a membrane – a detail that’s definitely worth mentioning. The membrane helps move moisture away from the foot while also helping to keep warmth in, so the boots can handle cooler, wetter days without your child’s feet getting damp or cold.

The 5 mm sole is pleasantly flexible. The foot bends naturally in the shoe without unnecessary resistance, which is exactly what I expect from barefoot footwear. The tread pattern also does a great job on wet surfaces – something we were able to confirm in real life.

A practical bonus is the combination of laces and a side zip. You can set the fit properly to your child’s foot once, and then for the next wears you simply unzip – no faffing about tying and untying laces every time. With five-year-old Samuel, we appreciate this every morning.

Testing out and about

Samuel really put the boots through their paces – and it definitely wasn’t just a stroll along the pavement. There was plenty of running, a trek through wet grass, and of course his favourite puddles. This is where the tread proved itself – on wet ground, the boots didn’t slip at all.

The side zip turned out to be a brilliant helper in practice. Samuel could get the boots on and off quickly. For a child who doesn’t want to be held up, that’s a big advantage day to day.

The suede leather, treated with waterproofing spray, wiped down easily with a damp cloth once we got home. No dramatic cleaning, no stains that wouldn’t budge. That makes everyday life a lot easier.

Final verdict

What impressed us most was the combination of room for the toes, a secure fit, and a soft, flexible sole. With kids’ barefoot shoes, it’s important that there’s enough space, but without the foot feeling like it’s ‘swimming’ around inside – and that’s exactly what RAYVE BILBAO 3.0 delivers.

We’d recommend them to parents looking for ankle-height barefoot footwear for an active child – one who needs freedom for their toes, but also benefits from a secure hold and quick on-and-off. Overall, they made a very good impression on us, and my son really enjoyed wearing them. In my view, this is exactly how testing children’s shoes should look – full-on, with everything that comes with childhood.
